Second Bukharian Congress of USA and Canada  Top
congress pic A decade after its official commencement, on January 23, 2010 The Bukharian Community Center welcomed with open arms The Second Annual Bukharian Congress of USA and Canada.

Delegates from 50 organizations were invited from around the USA and Canada to unite for a historic event in our community. The Bukharian Jewish Community Center in New York City was the heart of the action for this incredible uniformity of youth representatives. The mission of this Congress was to discuss, as a National Organization, several topics affecting every organization simultaneously. No matter where in the country we Bukharians are scattered, we are all from one common background with the same history and therefore must march into the future as one culture.

Among the delegates from various “Grown-Up” organizations, there was a vast majority of Bukharian Youth Organizations. This is a wonderful achievement for ukharians because these youth organizations work to continue and spread the ideas of our culture to inspire future generations of Bukharians. Our grandparents and parents instilled in us the values which we are able to pass onto our children thus ensuring that ten, twenty, thirty years from now the Bukharian Culture will continue to thrive and flourish.

The Congress for the Youth was on the first night, January 23, 2010. Sixteen representatives were present and among those in attendance were our own youth organizations from NYC, BJOY and Achdut-Unity. The main topics for discussion and debate included:

§ Integration of Bukharian culture into American Life (is it a losing battle?)
§ Language programs
§ Past/Present/Future
§ UNITY (yes/no)
§ Community Center
§ Building blocks for youth organizations (both developed and new)
§ Student Fund
§ Life coaching programs
§ Fund Raising
§ Youth in Politics

The Chief Rabbi of Bukharian Jews, Rabbi Yehoshua, opened the ceremony with an invigorating speech of coming together as one culture and maintaining our religion as one nation. Boris Kandov, the President of the Bukharian Community Center of New York, inspired the youth with his story of coming to America and beginning his journey to unify the Bukharian Jews under one organization.

Speakers included Rafael Nektalov, Chief Editor of the Bukharian times, Vera Aronova, First President of Bukharian Jewish Organization of Youth (BJOY), David Mavashev, CEO of NASTEL Corp., among others. They all gave insight into how crucial it is that we must all act like leaders and continue to unify and pass down our cultural values and stop assimilation. Regardless of the circumstances, one must always think and perform like a leader.

Further, Alex Yadgarov, the acting President of BJOY was presented an award for his achievements within the community. On behalf of BJOY team he commented on the success of the events and on the success of unifying the youth to act as one. He introduced the upcoming events that BJOY will host, among those being several encouraging lectures from renowned Rabbis, and parties for everyone to take part in. The purpose of BJOY is to unify the youth into one group where everyone can come and be a part of a greater sector in their community. Together, in unity, as BJOY, we will achieve great things!
As the Bukharian youth, we have already achieved many great things. At CUNY Queens College, we just opened a new class for the study of Bukharian Jewish History and Culture. Now the future generation who does not know where we came from or who we are will have the opportunity to learn this and so much more.

We also succeeded in placing a Bukharian woman onto the ballot for Assembly Woman of NYS. Lilliana Zulunova, is a young woman from our Bukharian Community who is striving to become the first Bukharian in the political sphere of life. We wish her the best of luck and will stand behind her every step of the way.

These are just a few examples of how far we as a culture and as a national community have come. But we have a long way to go and I am confident that in our time we will see Bukharians in every aspect of life achieving great things and continually setting examples for the growing generations of Bukharians.
