Albert Cohen For City Council |

Live your dream of more affordable housing,
more green parks, better healthcare, cleaner
and safer streets, and enhanced programs for
our youth and elderly. Embrace greater
opportunities for the working middle class
parents who strive to put bread on the table
in quest of the American dream.
If all of this is at the top of your
priority list, then Albert Cohen is your
candidate for City Council. He will bring
your voice to City Hall.
Alberts conviction is solid. For many years
he dedicated himself to the issues of better
education, senior citizens, development,
community affairs, and immigration.
When he moved to the neighborhood from
Cleveland, Ohio in 1998, he faced the bitter
reality of the area: massive flow of
immigrants settling in this part of the city
lacking the knowledge, training and skill to
adapt to their surroundings and new home.
The vast majority of these people found it
enormously difficult to cope with simple
daily functions, with the elderly heading
into depression, the working class
struggling through the mysterious labyrinths
of new laws and codes of conduct and with
the youth succumbing to the unsupervised and
often dangerous street life.
Distraught over what he saw, Albert took a
stand to make a difference. He pursued a
Jurist Doctor degree from Pace University
School of Law and upon graduating Cum Laude,
in 2002, made his statement loud and clear.
A community begins with one person. If one
person takes a step towards what is right,
we will all move forward.
Serious and determined to make a difference,
and armed with a well-rounded education and
experience, Albert dedicated himself fully,
to serving the interests of the public.
Albert supported various neighborhood
recreational, educational and religious
centers, by diligently investing his
resources, efforts and expertise. He devoted
pro bono legal counseling to families in
need and placed editorials in several
community magazines and newspapers. He
organized fundraising and awareness for
community events such as women of the year,
poetry evenings, and education center
administrative meetings.
Untainted by complex politics, and with a
determination to make a difference, Albert
has a vision and sincere interest for the
benefit of the neighborhood and community as
a whole.
He is dismayed by hospital closures in the
area. He is determined to fight for more
public healthcare services for residents in
the neighborhood. Albert is appalled by the
fact that there are only two nursing homes
available in the area and will fight for
more quality services for seniors.
Albert, who maintains a home with his wife,
who is also an attorney, and two children in
Kew Gardens, is a firm believer in
beautifying our neighborhoods while
maintaining the esthetic looks of
architectural origins. He is also keen on
the zoning issues and is determined to reach
a solution in the neighborhood building
skirmish.
Albert wants to see our community flourish
and grow; giving path to new theatres,
museums, cultural centers and parks.
As a father, he wants his own two kids to
grow up in a better neighborhood, safer
streets and enriched cultural lifestyle.
As a proven leader, Albert Cohen is
unmatched in his determination and ability
to carry out his vision and ultimately
stands alone as the most dedicated
candidate, for the 29th Council District,
taking great steps in the right direction
today, for a better tomorrow.

Its Sunday May 31, 2009; the Bukharian
Jewish Organization of Youth (BJOY)
marched with the Bukharian Community on
the streets of Manhattan to support
Israel's 61 anniversary of independence
in the event named as the Salute to
Israel. This was another year that the
community leaders and community was
standing behind Israel's Independence.
This time, the turnout was not as grand
as it was the previous year, but it was
definitely a historic moment yet again,
because once again we were standing
behind what we believe in, Israel's
Independence.
Sunday morning, the Bukharian community
youth, joined by Boris Kandov, Albert
Dayan, Aron Borukhov, Roman Mavashev,
Alex Yadgarov, Bukharian Teen Lounge,
and others met at the 71st Bukharian
Center at 10:30AM. As everyone boarded a
sixty one seat coach bus, the air was
filled with excitement. It was a smooth
ride; everyone was getting ready for a
march of a lifetime. To stroll on the
streets of Manhattan and be proud of
your beliefs is an incredible
accomplishment, it is something that
other countries punish and jail for, but
here in New York, USA, we get to
practice our constitutional right,
freedom of expression.
Further, as the bus arrived at its
destination, everyone found themselves
waiting in line behind different Jewish
organizations that were ready to march
on the 5th Avenue; starting at 47th
Street to 82 Street. The other Jewish
communities came with big floats and
banners, accompanies by music and
musicians. As for us, we carried a big
banner proclaiming the Youth as the
front runners of the march and the
future of our community. We also carried
Israeli and American flags, this time we
did not have Karna and Surna, however,
we hope we get it back next year. The
march was great; at each few blocks
announcers announced each Jewish
organization. There were a lot of
organizations from all over New York
marching, schools students, clubs,
organizations, communities, and etc...
There were a lot of people as in most
parade cheering and supporting the
march.
Finally, in the end of our march,
everyone boarded our luxurious bus to go
back to Queens; accompanied by sweets
and drinks on their way home.

Fire up the mangalka its time for the annual
BJOY BarBQue! When BJOY throws a party everyone wants to join! On May 25, 2009,
Events Coordinator Alla Dzhurayeva along with Senior Editor Daniel Mirzakandov
and Jake Yakubov, awoke early in the morning to drive into Morley Park and set
up camp. It would not be long before everyone showed up to start this amazing
day of fun and sports.
By midmorning most of the BJOY crew had arrived and the food was ready to be
cooked. The lovely ladies of BJOY
including Nora Mavashev, Lilia Abramova, and Yulianna Albertina, went to work
making the loads of salads and assisting the cooks of the day, Roman Mavashev,
Michael Mavashev, and Daniel Zavlunov.
The aroma of Lolya Kebabs, Chicken Kebabs,
Tomato Kebabs and corn on the cob filled the park. The center-piece of the feast
was the magnificent Osh Ploff, cooked by the skilled hands of Mr. David
Mavashev. Not a grain of rice was
left. Delicious!
Fun in the sun also included playing the
numerous amounts of sports. Every member took part in Volleyball, Basketball and
Soccer. Of course several rounds of the popular Russian card game, Duraka were
played, as well as Backgammon, Chess and Checkers. Fun for everyone!
The picnic was a great success; over 150 people
showed up and joined in on the fun! The summer has just peaked.
BJOY will definitely throw more barbeques this
season! Stay tuned!!
